The kitchen work triangle is an architectural design concept designed to make working in the kitchen more efficient. The triangle refers to the configuration of the sink, stove, and refrigerator. The configuration of the work triangle is a major consideration in kitchen design and remodeling.
The work triangle is a kitchen design concept intended to minimize steps while working in the kitchen, while maximizing aesthetic design and functionality. Each of the three points of the kitchen triangle correspond to the stove, refrigerator, and sink. The distance between each of these points make up the kitchen work triangle. Ideally, these three points are close enough to one another to make work efficient, but not so close to make the kitchen feel cramped.
Most contemporary kitchen configurations support the kitchen work triangle, with the possible exception of the single-wall kitchen.

In the late 1920s, industrial engineer Lillian Gilbreth, pioneered the L-shaped kitchen layout in an effort to maximize motion efficiency in kitchens. Gilbreth referred to this layout as “circular routing” but it later became known as the Kitchen Work Triangle. In the 1940s, the University of Illinois School of Architecture and the Building Research Council developed ergonomic configurations, resulting in a variety of standardized construction layouts for the work triangle.
There are a few basic guidelines to remember with the kitchen work triangle.
While the dimensions of your kitchen work triangle may vary by the layout and design, traditionally, the three sides of your work triangle should be between 13 and 26 total feet, and the distance between should be between 4 and 9 feet.
If you’re using a kitchen island, you can definitely modify the work triangle to use the island. Many kitchen islands allow installation of a sink or cooking surface. This allows you to put one of the points of the triangle where the island sits. The rules of the work triangle are adaptable—as long as the principles of the dimensions work, where or how you place your appliances is up to you.
