8 Types of Kitchen Layouts

When you’re planning a kitchen remodel, choosing what style of kitchen layout to build is a very important decision. The layout of your kitchen affects the functionality, daily workflow, counter space, and lifestyle of your kitchen. Before making a decision on your new kitchen layout, consider the total space in your kitchen, appliance placement, storage capacity, and how busy your kitchen will be. A good kitchen design can make your life more fulfilling and transform your home.

1. L-Shaped Kitchen

An L-shaped kitchen features two countertops and appliances sitting adjacent and perpendicular to each other, forming an L-shape. The opposite corner is open. This layout works well in all sizes of kitchens. One type of L-shaped kitchen layout places the stove on one wall, and the sink on the adjacent wall with the refrigerator on the end of that corner. This layout creates a very efficient workspace.

Pros

  • Work zones are flexible
  • Easy to add kitchen island
  • Medium-sized kitchen feel larger
  • Great for open layout homes

2. U-Shaped Kitchen

The U-shaped kitchen is a space-saving layout with countertops on three walls, with workspaces on those three walls. The fourth side of the kitchen is open, making it the entrance to the kitchen. A typical layout has the sink, stove, and refrigerator on three separate walls, or one free countertop space, with the stove and refrigerator on one side, and the sink on the third side. This layout makes it easy to move between workspaces.

Pros

  • Very efficient workspace, work area on three sides
  • Lots of countertop and cabinet space
  • Perfect for people who love to cook
  • Efficient use of work triangle
  • Great for people who need lots of cabinet storage
  • Works best with medium to large-sized kitchens

3. G-Shaped Kitchen

A G-shaped kitchen is similar to a U-shaped kitchen, but it adds a partial counteropt or peninsula on the fourth side, leaving a smaller entry point to the work area of the kitchen. This layout has maximum counter space and works best in larger kitchens where more than one person may be working at once. A typical layout would have the refrigerator near the entryway, on one of the walls, the sink and stove on different sides, to spread out the workspace, and lots of cabinet and countertop space.

Pros

  • More storage space than U-shaped kitchens
  • Ability to add extra seating at the countertop on an outer edge
  • Good for large families with lots of cooking and activity
  • Clearly defined areas for cooking, washing & prepping in the sink, working, and seating
  • Best for kitchens with lots of floor space where more workspace is needed

The biggest challenge with G-shaped kitchens is preventing a traffic jam at the entry point at the fourth side.

4. Galley Kitchen

A galley kitchen has two parallel walls of countertops with a walkway between them. The stove, sink, and refrigerator are positioned on one of the walls or nearby. For small to medium-sized kitchens, this compact layout is one of the most efficient uses of space and the work triangle. Galley kitchens work best for areas that are small and narrow, where only one cook will be working at a time.

A typical galley kitchen layout would be: countertops and cabinets on parallel walls, sink and stove on one side, refrigerator on the other side.

Pros

  • Good for smaller homes or condos
  • Efficient use of space
  • Lower remodeling costs
  • Can be modernized with updated lighting and cabinets

5. Island Kitchen

Island kitchens can work well with other layouts, including L-shaped, galley kitchens, and U-shaped or G-shaped kitchens (if there is enough room). A kitchen island is placed in the center of the kitchen and may be installed with a sink, countertop stove, or simply be used for a prep area. The island provides extra workspace, making a tighter, more efficient work triangle.

Pros

  • More prep space and potentially storage space
  • Makes it easier for multiple people to cook at once
  • Increased work area
  • More efficient work triangle

Island kitchen layouts work best when your kitchen is at least 13 feet wide. Consider the width of the kitchen island to make sure there is at least 36 inches clearance to pass comfortably on all sides.

6. Peninsula Kitchen

A peninsula kitchen is a U-shaped kitchen with an open side. Typically, two sides are connected to adjacent walls, exactly like an L-shaped kitchen, with a detached third side that is open to the next room. This peninsula offers all the advantages of a U-shaped kitchen without restricting movement to the next area of your home. The peninsula can be used for seating, for a dining area, an informal coffee area, or extra prep area. A typical layout has the stove, refrigerator, and sink each on one of the sides. This space-saving layout works well in smaller kitchens.

Pros

  • Same advantages as U-shaped kitchen
  • Lots of prep workspace
  • Movement not restricted
  • Dedicated dining space

7. Single Wall Kitchen

Designed for smaller kitchen areas, a single wall kitchen places the sink, stove, countertop work area, and refrigerator all on a single wall. Storage is in cabinets above and below the countertop. Stacked appliances may also be used to use space more efficiently.

Pros

  • Streamlined look and workflow
  • Works well in kitchens with limited space
  • Lower remodeling costs
  • Ideal for ADUs or smaller homes
  • Also works well with open floor plans

8. Open Concept Kitchen

Open kitchens are open on multiple sides, often with a kitchen island in the middle to provide a prep area. These work well in large kitchens where other rooms are adjacent, and the floor plan is open and expansive. The stove, refrigerator, and sink may be on different walls, and the countertop may be broken into non-continous sections.

Pros

  • Good for open floor plans
  • Excellent for entertaining
  • Small appliances work best
  • Modern look

The work area should be considered when planning the placement of appliances.
