White Quartz Countertops: Everything You Need to Know

Add Your Heading Text Here

If you’re remodeling your kitchen, three of the biggest costs will be in the cabinets, appliances, and countertops. The countertops and cabinets make a huge impact on the overall aesthetics of the kitchen, so selecting the right countertop is an important decision. Many Sacramento homeowners are choosing white quartz countertops because they are durable, low-maintenance, and fit many different design styles. Before you make a decision about a kitchen countertop, let’s look at the pros and cons of white quartz.

What are White Quartz Countertops?

Quartz countertops are engineered stone made from 90 to 95% natural stone, mostly quartz, with some granite and marble, and the remaining 5 to 10 percent is polymer resins and pigments. The resulting countertops are strong, durable, and non-porous, creating consistent patterns and colors. Natural stone quartz slabs have some inconsistencies and unpredictable patterns. White quartz countertops come in a wide variety of shades, colors, and patterns to fit both modern and classic tastes.

Pros of White Quartz Countertops

Durability

Quartz is incredibly durable, with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. This makes it harder than some other natural stone such as marble. This makes it very scratch resistant.

Stain Resistant

Quartz is non-porous, meaning it is stain-resistant. Be sure to blot any spills with a paper towel or microfiber towel and then wipe the remainder up with warm water and mild soap.

Easy to Clean

Use mild soap and a microfiber towel, don’t use abrasive cleaners.

Waterproof

Non-porous surfaces like white quartz are mildew resistant, because the surface is relatively sealed compared to more porous natural stone such as marble.

Scratch Resistant

White quartz countertops are very scratch resistant due to their high level of hardness. It’s rare when they get damaged by everyday use.

Consistent Patterns and Colors

Irregularities, flaws, and inconsistencies in natural stone slabs are absent in engineered stone countertops. These countertops look and feel like 100 percent natural stone, but they are easier to maintain due to the minute amount of resin polymer engineered into the countertop.

Versatile Design Styles

White quartz countertops fit in classic styles, modern homes, contemporary interior design and many different aesthetics. With an entire array of styles, colors, and patterns to choose from, there’s something for every single home renovation.

Clean Appearance

White quartz is a choice for many homeowners because it catches and reflects light, making it shiny, bright, modern, and elegant in appearance. Some homeowners choose white quartz because it makes their home look luxurious without being overstated.

Hygienic Surface

Because white quartz is a non-porous surface, it prevents bacteria and mildew from growing in tiny crevices found in more porous materials. Some surfaces allow small particles of food to be lodged in miniscule holes, causing microorganisms to thrive. Quartz does not have this issue, making it one of the most hygienic surfaces for countertops.

Cons of White Quartz Countertops

Vulnerable to Heat

Hot pans and cookware can discolor white quartz countertops, so don’t place hot pots and pans directly on the surface. Because white quartz countertops are made with 5 to 10 percent resin polymers, the extreme heat can cause yellow discoloration from scorch marks. Keep hot skillets on the stove, not the countertop.

UV Light Can Damage Them

High quality white quartz is generally color stable, but prolonged exposure to UV light can cause discoloration over time, turning the white color a yellow tinge. Keep the countertop out of direct sunlight on a day to day basis.

Stay Away From Harsh Chemical Cleaners

Chemical cleaners can also damage the small percentage of resin in the composition of white quartz countertops, causing discoloration.

Shows Dirt Easily

White surfaces show dirt, grime, grease, and food more noticeably than darker colors. Make sure to wipe quartz surfaces down with a non-abrasive cleaner.

Repair is Difficult

If and when there is severe damage to quartz countertops, repair requires acrylic adhesives and epoxies. This is a job for experts.

More Expensive Than Other Materials

Various factors can influence how much a countertop costs per foot, including the pattern, materials, and brand, but quartz countertops are generally more than some materials.

Professional Installation Required

Installing white quartz countertops is not recommended as a do-it-yourself project. It takes precise measurements, specialized tools, and the knowledge of remodeling experts to install quartz countertops correctly.

Maintenance Routines for White Quartz Countertops

Keeping your white quartz countertop clean and pristine shouldn’t be a struggle. Here are steps you can take to keep them in top condition for years to come.

  • Wipe down daily. Clean your countertops daily with warm water and a mild soap, preferably with a microfiber towel to prevent scratching.
  • Clean stains right away. When there are spills on your white countertop, bot them with a clean cloth and clean with a pH-neutral cleaner. Do not wipe up spills before blotting with a clean cloth or paper towel.
  • Keep hot pots and pans away. Heat can damage the resins in the countertop and leave yellow discoloration. Take care to never put hot pots or pans directly on the countertop.
  • Always use a cutting board. White Quartz countertops are non-porous, but you should still use cutting boards for food prep. This will prevent inadvertent scratching and damage to your knives.
  • Avoid harsh chemical cleaners. High abrasive cleaners and high-pH products with lots of alkaline or acidity can break down the polymer resins in the countertop. Always use mild cleaning products.

Styles of White Quartz

Because white quartz countertops are an engineered product, they can come in a wide variety of styles, shades, colors, and patterns. There are over fifty shades of white available on the market, anywhere from a gray, to cream, to alabaster white, the choices are vast! No matter what the style of your kitchen or bathroom, there will always be a white quartz countertop that fits perfectly.

Solid White Quartz Countertops

This countertop style has minimal colors, no veining or speckling, just solid iconic white, for a modern elegant look.

White Marbled Quartz Countertops

These countertops contain veining, usually in gray or other natural colors, resembling a natural stone slab or marble slab.

Speckled White Quartz Countertops

These countertops are dotted with tiny flecks of gray, off white, blue, brown, and black. Some countertops mix in flecks of gold or silver colored minerals to reflect the light better.
