What To Expect When Remodeling Your Bathroom

Remodeling your bathroom—or any room in your home—can seem like an intimidating project. You’re investing time, money, and energy into changing your bathroom, and if you’ve never done this before, you might not know what to expect. Never fear, this guide is here to give you an idea of what goes on during a bathroom remodel.

Steps in a Typical Bathroom Remodel

Most experienced remodeling contractors follow a process similar to this one described below.

1. Initial Consultation

The contractor meets with you and you discuss your goals for the project, budget, and timeline. You’ll be able to present your ideas for the design, aesthetic, and design. The remodeling contractor will be able to give you a rough idea of what your new bathroom will look like, and present options for materials and features.

2. Choosing Design & Materials

If you both move forward with a project, you’ll finalize a design and choose the materials and finishes for your bathroom renovation project. This includes the color palette, flooring, vanities, shower or tub, lighting fixtures, paint, sink, shower head and other plumbing fixtures. These choices will determine the total cost and/or timeline of the project.

3. Obtaining Permits

A building permit is required for any change of structural elements, adding a room, changing plumbing or electrical infrastructure. A reputable local contractor can get permits quickly.

4. Gathering Building Materials

The remodeling contractor gathers all the materials they will need, usually from local suppliers, like a kitchen and bathroom showroom, lumber yards, home improvement centers, and paint stores.

5. Demolition

If you have a tub or shower that is being replaced, if you have plumbing or electrical that needs to be upgraded or moved, if you have flooring being upgraded—this is when the demolition occurs. Don’t worry though, your new bathroom is about to take shape.

6. Plumbing and Electrical Adjustments

Moving plumbing or electrical lines, relocating piping, and adding electrical outlets are all part of this stage. This may require cutting or demolishing drywall to gain access to crucial infrastructure. Toilets may be installed, making adjustments to ensure proper drainage in the shower base is also part of this process.

7. Tubs, Showers, and Finishing

This stage of the process involves getting everything back in place and adding finishing touches. Tubs and showers are added, shower enclosures are built, vanities and sinks set up, and plumbing lines are connected to tubs, showers, and sinks.

Flooring and tiling is installed. Drywall or cement board is put back in place, and walls are sanded and repainted. Accessories such as mirrors, towel bars, storage, are added. Lighting fixtures may be installed if not done already.

8. Final Cleanup

Workers do a deep cleaning to the work area. Plumbing lines, sinks, tubs, and showers are tested. Everything is inspected by the construction crew.

9. Project Inspection and Signoff

The homeowner and contractor’s team walk through the project and all items are signed off on. You can stay in touch with the contractor if you need questions answered after the project wraps up.

FAQs

Why Do People Invest in Bathroom Renovations?

There are different reasons homeowners want to upgrade their bathroom. They may desire better functionality, more usable space, or more features their current bathroom lacks. Another reason is they may be preparing the home for sale and they want to get a higher price. Sometimes, a family might need a remodeled bathroom or a bathroom addition to accommodate extra family members coming to stay long term. It could be they just want a more beautiful bathroom, or they’ve already done renovations on other rooms, and they want the bathroom to match the rest of the home.

What Type of Work is Done in a Bathroom Renovation?

There can be a wide range of work in any given bathroom remodel. Some common portions of a bathroom remodel include tub to shower conversions, installing a free standing tub, walk-in tub installation, new vanities, updated plumbing and electrical, new flooring or tiling, new paint and accessories, premium sink or shower fixtures, and new lighting fixtures. Homeowners might also be adding a half bathroom or a full bathroom to an existing home.

Why Do Homeowners Hire a Professional Remodeling Contractor?

While it’s true that some small projects can be DIY, larger projects are best left to the pros. This is especially true if the project involves moving plumbing, installing new showers or tubs, upgrading electrical wiring, or if you aren’t much of a handyperson. A good general contractor can do a better job, make surfaces level, connect plumbing correctly, and ensure proper drainage. They can also get permits quicker, get the job done faster, and make sure there is nothing overlooked.

How Long Does a Bathroom Remodel Take?

Every remodeling project has a different scope, but most bathroom remodeling projects range from a few days to a couple weeks. The timeline of the bathroom renovation depends on the complexity of the project.

How to Prepare Your Home for a Bathroom Remodel?

Make sure pathways to the bathroom are clear, secure pets outside or in another room during work hours, and have the contractor tarp any nearby furniture to prevent dust.

Can We Use Our Bathroom During a Remodel?

Many homeowners are wondering if they can use the toilet, shower, or tub during a bathroom remodel. The answer is yes, for most of the time, your bathroom should be available for family use. The only instance it would potentially be unavailable is when your contractor is working on the plumbing, or installing a new tub, toilet, or shower.

How Do I Know if the Workmanship is High-Quality?

Are you concerned about whether the work is up to code and the craftsmanship is going to last for years? A reputable contractor will clear all the permits and building inspections with the city and county officials. A good contractor will also have a warranty on workmanship in their contract for a reasonable period of time.

Can Remodeling Contractors Add Another Bathroom to My Home?

Most experienced contractors will have no problem adding a half-bathroom or full bathroom to your home, which can also increase the value of your home.
