Inset vs Overlay Cabinets Which is Right for Your Kitchen?

When planning your kitchen remodel, the cabinets are one of the most important components of the renovation. Your cabinets take up a great deal of linear space, and help set the tone for the visual aesthetic of your kitchen. Functionality is also very important, and durability and overall cost are also factors in choosing between inset and overlay cabinets.

This guide will show you the difference between the two styles of cabinets, highlight the pros and cons, and highlight the different options for both inset and overlay cabinets.

What Are Inset Cabinets?

Inset cabinets feature doors that sit flush with the cabinet frame. This is a classic style of old cabinetry, reminiscent of a time when everything was handmade, and not mass produced. The doors sit inside the frame of the cabinet opening, instead of being hinged to the outside of the frame. Inset cabinetry is dependent on precise measurements, to make everything look even and level. This type of vintage cabinetry is popular in farmhouse kitchens, French kitchens, and country kitchens. Inset cabinets have a clean, refined aesthetic that is subtle, yet beautiful.

What Are Overlay Cabinets?

Overlay cabinets are a style of cabinetry where the door is hinged to the outside of the cabinet face. The cabinet door completely covers the frame. Overlay cabinets are a more modern invention, they didn’t appear until after World War II. Today, they are the most popular type of cabinet — most homes feature overlay cabinets.

There are two different subcategories of overlay cabinets: full overlay cabinets and partial overlay cabinets.

Full Overlay Cabinets

Full overlay cabinets feature doors that completely cover the face of the cabinet frame. This creates a streamlined, seamless look for your kitchen, leaving minimal gaps between the cabinet faces, and the doors and drawers. This creates a modern, contemporary look. Full overlay cabinets maximize storage space, using every square inch of the cabinet interior. These cabinets generally come with door handles and drawer pulls.

Partial Overlay Cabinets

Partial overlay cabinets have doors which cover the cabinet opening, with a visible border exposing some of the cabinet frame. This style leaves room around the edges of the cabinet door with finger room to pull the doors open. Partial overlay cabinets are a more traditional look which some homeowners enjoy. Partial overlay cabinets generally cost less than full overlay cabinets, and the measurements of the doors do not need to be as precise as full overlay.

Pros and Cons of Inset Cabinets

Inset cabinets have many characteristics that make them perfect fo some kitchens, but not the right fit for others.

Pros

  • Classic, timeless elegance. Inset cabinets hearken back to a time of great craftsmanship. Most homes don’t feature inset cabinets, they stand out with a level of sophistication and vintage cool that isn’t seen every day.
  • High-End appearance. The bespoke craftsmanship required to properly install inset cabinets gives a luxurious feel to your kitchen.
  • Flush fit. Inset cabinets fit flush against the cabinet frame creating a seamless, sleek appearance, with the doors sitting perfectly within the frame.
  • Versatile design options. You can choose hidden or visible hinges, different door styles, painted or stained finishes. Visible hinges look more decorative, hidden hinges create a cleaner look.
  • Precision craftsmanship. The precise construction required means sturdier joints, construction is more durable, more longevity.

Cons

  • Higher cost. Inset cabinets have a higher installation cost due to the precision and craftsmanship that is required. These cabinets may be 10 to 30% more expensive than their overlay counterparts.
  • More complex installation. Inset cabinets must be installed by experienced contractors. Each door is precisely measured and installed, it takes a little more time than overlay cabinets.
  • Slightly less storage space. Due to how the door is installed, you may lose ¾” to 1” of horizontal storage space in cabinets.
  • Not the best for humid climates. High humidity can cause warping and the doors may need to be adjusted.
  • Maintenance and cleaning. Because of how the doors are installed, dusting and cleaning between the gaps may take some extra effort.
  • Longer lead times. Because inset cabinets are more labor-intensive, production might take slightly longer.

Pros and Cons of Overlay Cabinets

Overlay cabinets are seen in many modern homes, here are the positives and negatives to consider.

Pros

  • Cost-effective. Overlay cabinets generally take less time to install, they do not require the same level of precision as inset cabinets. The materials used to manufacture overlay cabinets are also less expensive most of the time.
  • Contemporary Aesthetics. The look of overlay cabinets is modern and contemporary. These fit in most kitchens.
  • Storage-friendly cabinets. The maximum storage space is utilized, because the door sits on  the outside of the frame.
  • Easier installation. The process of installing overlay cabinets is less complex than inset, meaning you can save some labor expenses.
  • Many design options. Overlay cabinets have a wide range of options, meaning you can find a style that fits your vision and budget.
  • Easy maintenance. The space between the doors and the cabinet frame is easy to clean, it wipes up without a hassle.
  • Partial vs Full Overlay. Partial overlay has more characteristics of traditional inset cabinets, overlay is more contemporary. Together, this offers more options.

Cons

  • Less traditional aesthetic. Though overlay cabinets have a modern appearance, some homeowners feel they lack the character and traditional appeal that inset cabinets offer.
  • Not as customizable. Overlay cabinets are more mass produced and not as customizable as inset cabinets.
  • Potential for damage. Doors and drawers mount on the outside of the cabinet face, and they may be more susceptible to dents, scratches, and scuffs.
  • Visible gaps. The gaps between the doors and drawers and the cabinet frame may not look as sleek as inset cabinets.
  • Might not fit your design style. You may have to look hard to find overlay cabinets that work perfectly for your design vision.

Types of Inset Cabinets

Inset kitchen cabinets come in various door styles, including:

  • Inset Shaker. Minimalist, timeless, features clean lines and square-framed inset doors. Good for modern and vintage kitchen designs.
  • Beaded Inset. Refined, intricate look, detailed groove on the inside edge of frame.
  • Beaded Reverse Inset. Ornate, intricate craftsmanship. Bead is on the outside of the cabinet frame, creating a visually captivating effect. Detailing might be customized.
  • Raised Panel Inset. A raised central panel adds depth and dimension. Classic look, combines the best of contemporary and traditional design.
  • Recessed Panel Inset. Modern, sleek, streamlined aesthetic. Flat, recessed cabinet panels create a modern feel.
  • Arched Inset. Unique look with arched doors. Contemporary take on traditional arches. Adds lots of personality to your home.

Types of Overlay Cabinets

Overlay cabinets also have a range of styles including:

  • Full Overlay. Modern, contemporary look. Doors cover the entire cabinet face. The cabinet doors create a seamless appearance.
  • Frameless Overlay (European Overlay). No cabinet frame, the doors and drawers cover the whole cabinet box, creating a sleeker look. Distinct, minimalist, modern design.
  • Lipped Overlay.  Combines traditional and modern elements. The doors of these cabinets have a lip or edge cut out to fit into the cabinet frame.

Choosing the Right Kitchen Cabinets

Here are some things to think about when you choose kitchen cabinets for your home renovation.

Aesthetics

The big choice between overlay and inset cabinets comes down to the visual presentation and how it fits with the kitchen remodel. Inset is best for a classic, timeless look. Overlay or partial overlay work well for contemporary kitchen designs.

Budget

Overlay cabinets are a bit less expensive. Inset costs a little more due to the precision, labor. and craftsmanship that is required to install them correctly.

Ease of Installation

Overlay cabinets are much easier to install, they don’t require the precise measurements and expertise that inset cabinets do.

Climate

In extremely humid climates, the doors of inset cabinets can warp slightly, and they may need occasional adjustment. Overlay cabinets are easier to maintain in humid climates and are less prone to bending and warping.

Durability

Inset cabinets, when built correctly, can last for decades. Overly cabinets are fairly durable, but not quite as much as inset cabinets

Maintenance

Overlay cabinets are low maintenance, inset cabinets may need the occasional adjustment due to use, warping due to humidity, etc.

Storage Space

Inset cabinets have very slightly less room than overlay cabinets – maybe three-quarters of an inch to one inch of horizontal space.

Kitchen Size

For smaller kitchens, inset cabinets can make the space look more streamlined, making it appear more spacious. Overlay cabinets take up a bit more horizontal space.
