Energy-Efficient Home Remodeling in Sacramento

Sacramento homeowners, have you been looking for ways to save money each and every month on your energy bills? Did you know there are several types of home renovations you can do to make your home more energy-efficient?

Below we’ll talk about some of the most common home improvement upgrades you can get underway to start saving on energy bills while making your home more eco-friendly.

Why Invest in Home Energy Upgrades?

Energy-efficient upgrades can improve your quality of life in several ways:

Lower energy bills. Upgrading your home to more energy-efficient components can help reduce your energy bills. You can potentially save money on air conditioning in the summer and spend less on heating in the winter.

More comfortable living environment. Energy-efficient upgrades help you live in a climate controlled environment, where the temperature and humidity stay regulated with less electricity.

Reduce your carbon footprint. By consuming less energy, you can make a positive effect on the environment. When your household sends less carbon emissions into the atmosphere, it reduces greenhouse gases, helping curtail climate change.

Higher property value. Environmentally conscious buyers look for energy-efficient homes. Investing in eco-friendly upgrades can increase your home’s market value.

Practical Energy-Efficient Upgrades for Sacramento Homeowners

Here are some of the most impactful upgrades you can get underway to make your home more energy efficient.

Insulation

High-quality insulation is an essential component of maintaining a stable, consistent temperature in your home. Sacramento has sweltering hot summers and winters can be quite frigid, especially in the foothills or along the Delta.  Upgrading to ENERGY STAR® certified fiberglass insulation or blown-in cellulose insulation can keep your summers cool and your winters warm here in the Sacramento Valley.

Windows

Your windows play an important role in the temperature regulation of your home. Regular single pane windows can allow heat inside on hot summer days, and can allow heat to escape on cold winter nights. Upgrading to double or triple pane windows with low-emmissivity (low-E) coatings will drastically improve your insulation, reduce heat transfer, and help block UV rays, lowering your energy bills on heating and cooling.

LED Lighting

LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights are a modern, energy-efficient alternative to traditional light bulbs. They use up to 80% less energy than conventional light bulbs, and rarely need to be replaced. If you want to save a significant amount on your energy bills. LED lighting is an important upgrade to make to your home.

Energy-Efficient Appliances

Another way to make your home more eco-friendly is to replace outdated appliances with energy-efficient models with the ENERGY STAR® label. These refrigerators, stoves, stoves, washers, dryers, and dishwashers must meet stringent energy conservation standards, meaning you will spend less on energy over the course of the  year.

Smart Thermostats

A smart thermostat is a modern thermostat which optimizes your temperature settings based on your preferences. Most allow you to control the settings from a smartphone app, or manage your thermostat when you’re away from home. Smart thermostats can allow you to save money on energy without sacrificing your family’s comfort.

Energy-Efficient Water Heater

Your home heats up thousands of gallons of hot water each year, using significant amounts of energy to do so. Replacing an outdated water heater with a newer, more energy-efficient model can help save you tremendous amounts on your energy bills.

Local Programs to Help Sacramento Homeowners Pay for Upgrades

These local programs can help you pay for your eco-friendly upgrades and make your home more energy-efficient.

SMUD Home Performance Program (HPP)

The SMUD HPP program gives homeowners a rebate check for completing certain energy-efficient home upgrades. The funds are on a first-come first-served basis, and the home improvements must be done through a SMUD HPP contractor to qualify. Qualifying upgrades include: heating and cooling packages, heat pump water heaters, selling and insulation, replacing gas appliances with electric, installing an EV charger.

Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE)

PACE is a program through Sacramento County which helps pay for renewable energy, water conservation, and energy efficiency upgrades to properties of all sorts, including residential, commercial, agricultural, and non-profit. This is for properties in unincorporated areas, and in certain cases, the cities of Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove, and Galt. Eligible energy efficiency upgrades include: heating and cooling systems, lighting improvements, solar panels, water pumps, and insulation.

According to the Sacramento Country website, the funds are tied to the property, not the property owner, leveraging the equity of the property. “PACE pays for 100% of a project’s costs. This financing amount is then repaid over 5 to 20 years (up to 25 years for qualifying solar projects), with an assessment or special tax added to the property tax bill.”

Community Resource Project Weatherization

This is a local program in the counties of Sacramento, Yuba, Sutter, and San Joaquin that helps pay for energy efficiency and weatherization home improvements for low-income households. The funding comes from federal, state, and local programs. Eligible projects include upgrades to: heating and cooling systems, appliance replacement, home insulation and caulking, lighting replacement, and low-flow showerhead replacement.

Working with a Local Energy-Efficiency Contractor

As with any contractor, check their credentials and references. Find out if they guarantee their work and get any estimates in writing. Check to see if they have any special certifications in energy efficiency projects. Do your research before committing to working with a Sacramento contractor, and make sure they guarantee their workmanship in writing.
