8 Types of Natural Stone Countertops

Natural stone countertops add a distinct, luxurious look to your kitchen or bathroom. With its timeless beauty, unique one-of-a-kind patterns, and sturdy durability, natural stone is a great choice for your kitchen countertops. But which type of stone should you choose? There are different types of stone countertops that each have their own unique characteristics.

Let’s look at each of the types of natural stone used for countertops and the pros and cons of each.

Granite: Durable, Distinct, Timeless

Granite is a timeless, popular choice for kitchen and bathroom countertops, known for its granular texture, durability, and unique luxurious aesthetic. An igneous rock formed from slow-cooling magma, granite is composed primarily of quartz and feldspar, giving it incredible hardness and strength.

Many homeowners choose granite countertops for their beautiful appearance, resistance to heat and scratching, and wide range of colors and patterns. Granite can range all the way from resonant blacks, to deep vibrant colors, to elegant whites. The patterns can range from uniform to intricate veining.

When granite is polished, it is glossy and reflective, while a honed finish yields a non-reflective, matte look. Granite is less porous than marble, but it should be sealed every two to three years to prevent staining from coffee, wine, or cooking.

Summary: Beautiful aesthetic, many colors and patterns, high hardness and durability, heat and scratch resistant, lightly porous.

Marble: Luxurious, Elegant, Artistic

Marble is a distinct, luxurious metamorphic rock formed from limestone, known for its soft, milky base colors and dramatic veins. This beautiful natural stone makes any bathroom or kitchen look sophisticated and elegant. There are different varieties of marble that range in color from soft grays to classic white with higher contrast veins.

Marble is somewhat heat resistant, not as much as granite. Since it is a calcium based stone, it is susceptible to etching and staining. It should be sealed every 9 to 12 months to prevent discoloration. Marble also stays cool in most cases, making it good for kitchens.

Over time, marble develops a patina, adding more depth and character. Marble is used primarily in places where its elegance and beauty can stand out, such as bathroom countertops, around a fireplace, kitchen islands, or baking stations. Carrara marble has more soft gray veining, while Calacatta marble has more dramatic veining. Both of these are quarried in Italy.

Summary: Beautiful and elegant, white to gray coloring, classic luxurious aesthetic. Fairly porous and etchable, must be sealed. Somewhat heat resistant. Makes any home look incredible.

Quartzite: Ethereal, Luxurious, Best of Both Worlds

Quartzite is a naturally occurring metamorphic rock formed from sandstone. Incredibly durable and beautiful, quartzite is a great choice for luxurious kitchen countertops. The veining in quartzite is delicate and intricate, similar to marble, with a hardness and durability similar to granite. The colors and patterns of quartzite are subtle and luminous, ranging from soft whites, to grays, beige, reds, blues, and greens.

This stone has a natural luster, which becomes even greater when polished. A honed finish will result in a velvet matte look, which is quite elegant. Quartzite is quite hard, resistant to scratches and dings, and is also very heat resistant, making it perfect for kitchen countertops. It is however quite porous, and must be sealed when it is installed and about once a year afterwards.

Quartzite is a solid choice for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, bar counters, kitchen islands and anywhere you would use a countertop.

Summary: Resilient, durable, and both heat and scratch resistant. Porous stone that must be sealed every year. Natural veining, subtle color palette with wide range. Elegant look, stain resistant with sealing. Good for high traffic areas. Combines beauty and functionality.

Limestone: Warm, Natural, Rustic

Limestone is a sedimentary rock with a soft, creamy color palette, mostly shades of white, cream, and beige. This stone creates an elegant, timeless aesthetic, often used in kitchens inspired by Mediterranean design or French country kitchens. Limestone is formed primarily from calcium carbonate, in shallow marine waters, and may contain tiny shells or mineral deposits.

This is one of the softer types of stone countertops, and can be stained or scratched more easily than some of the other stones. This should be sealed every 3 to 6 months  to protect the finish.

A honed finish will give limestone a matte look, while a tumbled finish will give the countertop a warm, rustic look that is rather popular. Limestone is best for lower-traffic uses, such as bathroom countertops.

Summary: Classic rustic look, porous stone needs regular sealing; white and beige coloring, uniform pattern, not very scratch or heat resistant. Cheaper than marble or granite, good for country style kitchens or bathrooms.

Travertine: Rustic, Warm, Earthy

Travertine is a type of limestone traditionally used for flooring, but increasingly used for countertops in contemporary homes. The coloring is rustic and earthy, perfect for Mediterranean-style kitchens. With colors ranging from soft ivory, to golden creams and tans, to rich dark walnut, travertine is generally a warm palette

Unlike other stones, travertine is characterized by natural pitting, which is typically filled with epoxy, and sealed to create a uniform color and texture. Most travertine countertops have a honed finish for a matte luster. When it has a polished finish, travertine has a more glossy look, but this finish can show wear in higher traffic areas such as kitchen countertops.

Travertine is softer and more porous than granite, meaning it needs to be properly sealed to protect it from acidic substances like citrus juice and vinegar.

Summary: Soft and porous, must be sealed every 3 to 6 months, made from calcium carbonate, warm earthy tones, pitted texture before sealing, distinct appearance.

Onyx: Luminous, Beautiful, Stunning

Onyx is a rare natural stone, noted for its translucent appearance and distinct veining. This stone is normally used for visual impact, on a bathroom countertop, or home bar. The coloring is usually soft pastel, and with backlighting, it can look quite impressive, with the light reflecting through its beautiful layers, creating an ethereal glow.

The main drawbacks of onyx are it is a softer and more porous stone compared to some of the other countertop materials. Onyx will scratch easily and it needs to be sealed quite often. It is one of the most delicate natural stone materials, so it is usually used for lower traffic countertops. That said, in the right location, it can create an inspiring, beautiful aesthetic.

Summary: Luxurious, very porous, not at all scratch resistant, luminous and elegant.

Soapstone: Classic, Rustic, Versatile

Soapstone is a natural stone with a milky grayish-green or grayish color and a velvety texture. Composed primarily of talc, this dense metamorphic stone has very subtle veining. Soapstone is unique in that it develops a rich natural patina finish over time, adding to its charm.

For decades, soapstone has been used for kitchen countertops and laboratory benches, due to its resistance to bacteria and chemicals. Soapstone has high resistance to heat, and ultra-low porosity. Pots won’t burn soapstone, and it rarely needs to be sealed. It does scratch easier than a harder stone like granite, but easily buffs out with fine grit sandpaper and mineral oil.

Soapstone has a natural or honed finish that is smooth and silky, with an organic, rustic feel. This finish is perfect for farmhouse kitchens, traditional bathrooms, and rustic decor. When you apply mineral oil or a special wax, the luster is greater, the color becomes deeper, and the natural veining becomes more prominent.

Summary: Lots of earth tones, heat resistant, not scratch resistant but easy to repair, non-porous, great for kitchen countertops.

Slate: Sophisticated and Contemporary

Slate is a fine-grained, non-porous stone that is used for countertops in many minimalist and industrial settings. Known for its sophisticated deep tones, slate has deep blacks, charcoals, and grays, with some occasional subtle greens and purples. This provides a utilitarian, uniform look that is the perfect vibe for modern kitchens, commercial settings like clubs or high-end bars, or other contemporary applications.

This is a metamorphic rock that with a naturally cleft finish has a matte, non-reflective surface. With a honed finish, the surface is more smooth and velvety. Slate is incredibly heat resistant, scratch resistant, and non-porous. It won’t be stained or scuffed easily. Cleaning is simple and maintenance is very low-effort.

Many homeowners choose slate for its sophisticated, minimalist appearance, low maintenance, and uniform texture.

Summary: Deep dark tones, matte surface, non-porous, heat resistant, low maintenance, contemporary aesthetic.
